Shirley Kenneally – Hon. Secretary

sksecretaryMy interest in the needs of disabled people began when I produced a guide to local services for disabled people in Winchester & Central Hampshire in my job with the Community Health Council. Updated, it continued to be published until 1995 when much more information was becoming available especially via the internet.

I was nominated to serve on the Executive Committee of the Winchester Group for Disabled People (WGDP), launched in 1982, which was very active in creating awareness for people of all disabilities.

We worked closely with the statutory authorities and initiated a Disability Advice Office, Dial-a-Ride and Shopmobility (the latter two were then taken over and developed by Winchester Area Community Action (WACA).

As a result I sat on the Disability Discrimination Act Steering Group of the Winchester & Eastleigh Health Care Trust which was preparing itself to comply with the Act. I became WGDP’s Secretary until 1997 when I joined my husband on Winchester & District Scope and became Hon. Secretary in 2005.
