Thanks Winchester & District Scope!
We are all aware of how challenging it is to get any employment in the current economic climate. I graduated with a first class honours degree in Broadcasting in June 2008 and have since been looking for my first job in the media industry. However, whilst trying to compete in one of the most saturated job markets, I wanted to try my hand at volunteering.
My mum has been working at Winchester Citizens Advice Bureau for the past few years and encouraged me to apply for a volunteer position there. My application was accepted and the bureau manager was keen to get me started. However, there was a problem. For me to be able to use a computer efficiently at the bureau, I needed a touch screen for which the bureau did not have sufficient funds. The bureau couldn’t apply to the Access To Work fund because of my volunteer status.
Luckily, Winchester & District Scope saved the day by funding a touch screen for me to use in my volunteering role at the Winchester Citizens Advice Bureau. Without their help, I wouldn’t have been able to take the opportunity to volunteer at the bureau.
Since starting at the bureau, I have worked with so many fantastic people as well as developing my spreadsheet skills. My role generally consists of helping with ad-hoc research tasks and assisting with the compilation of various impact assessments and reports. I am currently helping the bureau to compile an impact assessment of their services which entails researching statistics, designing questionnaires for clients to fill in as a part of the data collection process, as well as working with the manager to produce a readable and fluid publication.
In a wider context, Winchester & District Scope have made it possible for me to take on this CV enhancing role thus becoming more attractive to other employers. I am now in contact with a number of television-related companies regarding work experience placements and even a six-month paid contract.
